Introduction

Stephen Chadwick is an award winning British composer and producer working in Film, TV, Multimedia, Advertising and Music Education. His versatility stretches from writing for symphony orchestras or world music combinations to work in the digital recording studio. His diverse clients include: Disney/Pearson, BBC, C4, Walk Tall Media/DKB (Zyliss, Cole & Mason, Ken Hom), Shopfloor Films, Rocket-Room FILMS, Collins Music, Bloomsbury, A&C Black, The London Philharmonic Orchestra, Water City Festival Orchestra, Roman River Orchestra.

Media composition

Theme and incidental music written for TV and radio includes the BBC's World Cup Stories 2010, Bitesize series, C4's Music Search, TTV's Literacy series and Disney/Pearson's English Adventure, which involved composing new music to over 30 excerpts from Disney's major animations. Recent work includes advertising music for DKB (kitchen products), Ken Hom and Pukka Herbs and film music for SHOPFLOORFILMS and ROCKETROOM PRODUCTIONS.

An award-winning composer

In 2010 Stephen composed the music for the BAFTA nominated BBC World Cup Stories and the the multi-award winning GCSE Bitesize revision series (RTS, ETMA and ERA awards).  He also received a Royal Television Society Award for his work on the BBC's Professor Allegro's World of Music - Music Maker Series, for which his song writing was especially commended.   As well as composing, Stephen has worked on many high-profile music educational programmes and media projects as co-creator/consultant and musical director, including the BAFTA award-winning Grid Club Music Studio website.  

Compositions for the concert platform

In 1989 Stephen began his long association with the London Philharmonic Orchestra from which he has received many commissions. Cotopaxi, written for panpipes and orchestra, was given its first performance in the Royal Festival Hall in 1992 by Incantation and was recently premiered in the USA. 

His enthusiasm for fusing contrasting musical traditions can be seen in the work, Endangered Species, written for African drumming group and orchestra, which was premiered at the Royal Festival Hall by the London Philharmonic Orchestra in 2004 and again in 2006 at the Barbican Centre. His epic song Celebrate was commissioned by the London Philharmonic to celebrate their 75th Anniversary and has been performed regularly since 2007. Stephen made his conducting debut with them in 1996. 

Publications

Publications include: Singing French, Singing English, Singing Spanish (A&C Black) - featuring songs in a variety of contemporary styles; and the Roald Dahl musicals Cinderella, Goldilocks and the Three Bears and Snow-White and the Seven Dwarfs, all commissioned by the Roald Dahl Foundation and published by Collins Music (formerly A&C Black). The musical, A Christmas Soldier, based on the Christmas truce of 1914, is published by Cramer Music Ltd (1990).   Most recently he composed the songs and music for Kaye Umansky's Robin Hood musical.

Stephen has also co-written many educational resources, including Three Rapping Rats (winner of the Times Ed. Music Book of the Year Award, 1999) and Music Express (winner of the Education Resources Award, 2003) both published by A&C Black.

Recording studio

Stephen has recorded, mixed and mastered many combinations (from indie bands to Jazz groups,  African drummers to digital synths) using both computer systems and traditional anolgue reel-to-reel.  He also has much expertise in the production and compilation of audio assets for games and internet including Grid Club (C4's ), GCSE BItesize revision (BBC) Tout le monde (Heinemann), Music Express on-line (Colins Music) and Lock Groove (Lock Groove DJ app). 

Education

He studied composition under Stanley Glasser at Goldsmiths College, London and after gaining his M.Mus in 1985, lectured on the B.Mus degree course in composition and music technology. He left Goldsmiths in 1992 to devote all his time to composing for media and the concert platform.  He also studied Film Music Composition with Don Ray (Hawaii Five-0)
